BURIALS IN TONYREFAIL
Although we have seen many churches and chapels in Tonyrefail over the years not all have had graveyards, infact only three have, Ainon chapel in Waunrhydd road, St Johns church in Llantrisant road and Capel Y Ton in High Street. We also have one municipal burial ground, Trane cemetery
AINON CHAPELAinon was built in 1860 and the grave yard was in use from 1862 until the chapel’s closure in 1990. The chapel was demolished in 1992 and has now been turned into a car park for the workmens club next door. the graves are still intact in their original locations but the headstones where removed. some are still on the site leaning against the wall of pantawell cottage while others have been removed. comprehensive burial records are available as a booklet created by the Glamorgan Family history society. It is available online from genfair for £1.50. The booklet lists most of the burials at Ainon with an A to Z index of sir names each with a grid reference and a map of the graveyard to show its position. It also features a full inscription from every grave stone.
ST JOHNS CHURCHNow home to Tonyrefails scouts, St. Johns closed as a church in 1960 with the grave yard closing some years earlier in 1952/53. it is believed that very few burials took place there after 1930 as the site was full and the ground unsuitable for deep burials. although some of the burial records where destroyed in a fire at the church soon after its closure some still exist. the recods that still exist are on the parish of tonyrefails website: http://www.dutchenery.talktalk.net/
CAPEL Y TONThe graveyard at Capel Y Ton was in use from the time the original chapel was built in 1791 up until the chapels closure in 2002. The chapel is now privately owned and the graveyard although easily viewable from high street and school street is inaccessible. Like Ainon chapel comprehensive burial records exist in the form of a booklet produced by the Glamorgan family history society which is available from genfair for £2.50. the booklet does not include burial details of the 52 people where moved to trane cemetery in 1969 as part of a road widening scheme in high street.
TRANE CEMETERYTrane cemetery on Gilfach Road was created after the burial act of 1853, which authorised the provision of municipal burial grounds by every local authority within the UK. Sadly no burial records are available online or in booklet form like the other graveyards in Tonyrefail, but the community council office which is located at Trane holds records which are searchable. Their contact details are on the usefull contacts page
