ST PETERS CHURCH, also know as llanbad churchthese ruins are of St Peters church, more commonly known as Llanbad church. the church was originally built during the twelfth or thirteenth century, then with the addion of chancel and south porch into the present church in the seventeenth. regular services finished in 1812 when at that time it was in a grove of pine trees. It falls within the parish of Coychurch rather than Tonyrefail, I’ve included it here as it forms part of Tonyrefails history and is within easy walking distance on Tonyrefail. it can now be found as a major landmark on part of the ridgeway walk.it has been brought to my attention by Angharad spooner that Llanbad isn’t actually a welsh word. in her research for the translation she contacted a curator from the museum of Wales who has said that the name Llanbad is a corruption of Llanbedr, or St Peter's. Lampeter, or Llanbedr Pont Steffan in Welsh, is similarly shortened to Llanbad locally.the views from the church are breathtaking. with a view on a clear day of over 50 miles.. many local towns can be seen from the church including Brynna, Bridgend, Cowbridge, St Hilary. on a clear day you can see across the channel to England.
