With the ever increasing numbers of non welsh speakers moving to Tonyrefail at the turn of the twentieth century, many where left with no place to worship. one such man was a Mr Harris from Cardiff he prevailed upon Mrs Phillips and Mrs Powell both of Tonyrefail to create an English speaking Baptist Church, as that time the only Baptist Church in Tonyrefail was Ainon which was Welsh speaking. after several temporary homes Salem English Baptist Church was built on gilfach road in 1904 at the cost of £300. it opened on the 9th December 1904. the church was extended with the building of a vestry in 1931 at the cost of £70 to house the ever growing sunday school that the Chapel ran.
