COEDELY COLLIERY

coedely colliery began producing coal at the turn of the century. within ten years it employed almost 1800 men making it one of the largest mines in the area.  it closed in 1985.

the colliery, together with the coke ovens and brick works that shared the site was an impressive sight and was one of the first things most people saw as they came to tonyrefail

CILELY COLLIERY

cilely colliery when first opened in 1873 was the largest mine in the area.  at it’s peak in 1900 it employed over 700 men producing some of the finest steam coal available.  it was closed on October 14th 1950

i pass the remains of the mine regularly when riding my mountain bike. little now remains,  you could easily walk past the ruins without knowing a thriving coal mine had ever been there.
