The Mari Lwyd
 
The Society, is this year bringing back a tradition that hasn’t been seen in Tonyrefail since the late thirties / early forties.. the Mari Lwyd..

What is the Mari Lwyd?
The Mari Lwyd (grey mare) is without a doubt one of the strangest customs we have in Wales. Found almost exclusively within Glamorgan and Gwent in South Wales it’s an ancient pagan custom thought to date back to pre-christian times. possibly the iron age period or earlier
 
The Mari Lwyd is a horses skull, mounted on a pole with fake ears and eyes and a horses reins, the holder of the pole is draped in a white sheet which is decorated with brightly covered ribbons and bells
 
Every year around christmas/new year the Mari Lwyd, followed by a party of people move from door to door within the village reciting traditional poems in welsh. Tradition also says that the home owner  replies in welsh verse refusing entry to the Mari Lwyd, the battle of words continues until the victorious Mari Lwyd is granted access to the home...
