Tonyrefail library has served our community for many years from the temporary building in high street. after the building fell into severe disrepair they finally moved to their new temporary home in February 2006.
This new home although a temporary building is much larger than the old library in high street with 120mtrs of floor space and now has wheelchair access
Having closed on February 6th for their move the library reopened on February 13th 2006 in their new temporary home by the side of the leisure centre while the council plan their permeant home in an extension to the leisure centre.
The old library was demolished on April 29th 2006
While no one can deny that the library had to find a new home due to the old buildings condition, I cannot understand why the council choose to situate the new temporary building where they did. a lot of youngsters hang around behind the leisure centre in the evenings and some vandalism was bound to occur. sadly this does seem to be a fairy regular occurrence as can be seen by these photographs. I really hope that the council can get the new library built before the vandalism gets worse or we see a catastrophic event like a fire.
