THE WAR MEMORIALTonyrefail, like most towns and villages though out great Britain erected a memorial after the first world war to pay tribute to those who had fought and lost their lives during the war Originally the plan was to put it near the centre of Tonyrefail at the T junction at the end of Waunrhydd road.
as a new wall was built along Gilfach road a set of gates where fitted ready for the memorial. sadly during excavation they got a few feet in and hit solid rock (as you can see in the photograph on the right) so the plans where quickly changed and the monument was to go in Trane cemetery
The memorial is situated just inside the main gates of Trane and looks as good now as the day it was unveiled
The memorial was finally completed and unveiled on november 16th 1924.virtually the whole village turned out for the unveiling ceremony with a procession through Tonyrefail to the Trane cemetery the photograph on the left shows the procession en route to the war memorial
